Depending on where you travel, time machines are no fun.

A time machine arrives in your front yard. The only catch is that you must travel back to a time in your own life. When do you choose? One period we are pretty sure you won’t choose: the early teen years.

Remember that time? The insecurity? The shifting social groups? Never feeling smart enough/athletic enough/beautiful enough? The teen years can be soul-crushing.

A mother with serious health conditions. A son living on the street with a drug addiction. A global pandemic. It was the perfect storm.

Alison* is a single parent. 3 years ago, she asked her adult son to leave her home because of his addiction.

The storm was coming though. By the beginning of the pandemic things had spiraled out of control; he was stealing, there were legal problems and her health issues meant she had to be careful about contact with others. She was desperate to set some boundaries with her son. A friend suggested she call Eagles Nest.

“There was so much yelling.”
That is one of the first things Elyse* mentions when asked why she enrolled her son Leo* in Emoticon, one of our programs for kids.

Leo is 8. He is a social guy. He loves games and hanging out with people. He also has big emotions that he doesn’t always know what to do with.

What if everything you believed about yourself was a lie? If you had been told things about yourself that weren’t true?

Recently Audrey* found out that believing lies about yourself can catch up with you when you least expect it.

Audrey is softly spoken and articulate. She is quick to give encouragement or share a story to make you smile. She is also extremely relatable as she shares how the pandemic affected her.

In the middle of the grocery store, Sarah’s phone rings. Her 11-year-old son Caleb needs to be picked up from school. Again. This time he flipped his desk and broke a laptop before storming out of class.

Sarah sighs, trying to decide whether she should abandon her cart and get Caleb right away or if she can wait a few more minutes and get some groceries.

During the last six months, there have been many unsettling moments as a result of the pandemic. Along with the rest of the world, Eagles Nest was faced with new challenges and unknowns. We suddenly stopped all our in-person services, temporarily closed our doors at Rescued & Restored, cancelled fundraising events and made difficult decisions to cut costs. Our team was unsure how our organization would endure the impact of this unique time in history.

We are grateful to now be able to share how these unexpected challenges, although difficult, presented our organization with new opportunities and allowed us to grow.

There is a quote from author Anne Lamott about grace that seems to capture what we think love looks like;

....it meets us where we are and does not leave us where it found us.

What does that mean if you come to the HOPE Centre for counselling, coaching or one of our programs?

It means no judgement, no shame and no “should haves”. It means acceptance, an open door, a listening ear and the tools to change things if you want to change them.
